Why Every Writer Needs to Watch "Stranger than Fiction"
Herold Crick leads an utterly common life; every day he wakes up at the same time, brushes his teeth a specific number of times, walks along the same street to the bus stop, always arrives to work at the exact same time and does not call any of this into question for the duration of 12 years, until he suddenly hears a woman's voice eloquently narrating his day-to-day and predicting his future with incredible precision. Entanglements that ensue will tragicomically turn his life upside down, making for a hilarious 113 minutes! But, why is this movie especially important to writers?
Keep reading to find out.
Impossibly-possible
idea
The main focus of this movie is the author
who manages to enter into the mind of her main character and manipulate his
every move all while not realizing that he is not actually fictional. This idea
is unusual, exciting, challenging, thus it can help you develop your own
creativity and think of an equally original idea for your next work.
Intriguing characters
Starting off with the neurotic author Karen
Eiffel, seemingly unassuming Herold Crick, energetic baker Ana Pascal, all the
way to literature professor Jules Hilbert who gives Herold a helping hand in
solving the mystery, each character has very unique role in plot development. An
example of absolute polarity is the romance between quiet Harold and rebellious
Ana. Their obvious differences push us to seek their commonalities; why would
such incompatible individuals such as them choose to be together? Unlikely
moments are exactly what attract the viewer or reader (in this case) to immerse
themselves in our story.
Skill of adaptation
At the end of the whole mess, Karen Eiffel
faces a tough decision whether: "To kill or to spare Herold Crick?"
Killing him would keep the continuity of all her novels' endings, resulting in
satisfying her fans, whilst sparing him would mean disappointing the publishing
company, fans and losing her credibility as an author. Being fully aware of all
that, she is forced to think outside of the box and make a mutually beneficial
decision.
Plot development
Looking at "Stranger than
fiction" as a whole, we can learn quite a bit about how to write an
unpredictable plot that is bound to thrill the readers. We find that
characters, setting, as well as the events which accompany the plot are equally
important for writing a fascinating and inspiring work.
Taking all the aforementioned advice given
by this movie into consideration, we are gaining a better understanding in
terms of how to write something truly magical; whether it is a novel, short
story or a screenplay, these tips are applicable to all of them. All it takes
is having enough creativity and perseverance in transforming genius ideas into
reality. Best of luck in your future work!
